- This resource covers more than 9000 inventions, discoveries and things that have happened in American history beginning in the year 1007 and continuing through 1980. This book is well organized with cross-references and four indexes to make this what is considered the most comprehensive and easily used compilation of first facts ever published.

- Written by Joseph Nathan Kane in July, 1981, describes all the research he has conducted since he first published the first edition fifty years earlier. He talks about his relentless efforts to seek facts from sources as varied as one-room rural libraries, to the Library of Congress to government departments and even the people themselves. He describes how he has arranged the information alphabetically by cross-referenced subjects. He clearly enjoys his work and takes pride in the details.
