How many FS databases does Buley subscribe to?

Buley Library subscribes to 22 databases.

Which FS Databases should you consult to find resources for a paper on Information Literacy and why?

I used the ‘suggest best databases’ function on the search screen, typed in ‘information literacy’ and ‘education’ with the results showing the following three databases:

•    WorldCat
•    LibraryLit
•    Dissertations

I broadened my search to  ‘information literacy’ and ‘general’ to see the difference it would make and the results showed the following databases:

•    Article 1st
•    Dissertations
•    Ebooks    
•    EssayGenLit        
•    WilsonSelectPlus    
•    WorldCat

I would start with these databases as the FS databases recommended as that is one of the features of FS. This function has been designed to aid the researcher and does much of the initial sifting through sources to find the relevant ones.

If you had to do a literature review on Domestic Violence which FS databases will you search and why?

Again, I would initially rely on the FS databases recommended in their search interface. I typed in ‘domestic violence’ and ‘general’ to get as broad results as possible and was recommended to conduct my search in the following databases:
  • WorldCat    
  • Dissertations        
  • ArticleFirst    
  • WilsonSelectPlus
  • Ebooks    
  • EssayGenLit

What is the difference between the subscription version and the web version?

The subscription version gives authorized users access to all the available databases through the local library. You will have immediate access to any full text resource your member library holds. The web version will link you to available information but you will not be able to access full text articles unless you have the appropriate identification for the institution with the holdings.

What is a Bibliographic utility?

A Bibliographic utility is a consortium that cooperatively maintains computerized bibliographic records for use by its members. These records are used for the purposes of accessing, managing and cataloging library collections.

What are other examples of Bibliographic utility?

The Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) of Research Libraries Group (RLG) are currently two of the most popular Bibliographic utilities

What is the difference between FirstSearch and Worldcat?

WorldCat is the largest online union catalogue database of OCLC.  It has over 130 million bibliographic records from 71,000 libraries worldwide. The total number of holdings is almost 1.4 billion. There are 112 countries represented in over 470 languages and dialects.

FirstSearch is an online reference service of OCLC. It provides access to more than 10 million full text articles and images through dozens of databases. Users access WorldCat through FirstSearch.
